Local resident Justin Maidenberg has organized a one-week summer basketball skills camp – Camp HOT  – which aims to bring together middle school girls and boys (11-14 years old) from the community to develop their skills in preparation for success at the next level when they return to school in the fall.

“HOT stands for “hard-work over talent,” said Maidenberg.  We focus on good habit formation, skill development, understanding theory and concept, and application.”

Maidenberg grew up in Hancock Park and currently works as the manager of the University of San Diego Division 1 men’s basketball team. He is also working on a graduate degree in leadership, and hopes to coach at the college level some day.

Maidenberg told the Buzz he spent the last two summers as a volunteer coach at Pan Pacific and decided to organize a skills-based camp because there wasn’t anything like it at the park.

“In addition to learning about the game, we intend for kids to make friends and have fun. Our mission is to instill in student athletes the love of competition, sportsmanship, attention to detail, and commitment to practice the fundamentals,” explained Maidenberg. “Our methods of coaching are through group discussions, individualized attention, drills in small and big groups, and scrimmages.”

The one-week camp is June 20-June24 from 9am-3pm. The fee is $350 and includes guest speakers, a camp shirt, reversible jersey, tote bag and prizes for various competitions.  Visit the blog for more information. https://camphotblog.wordpress.com or email Maidenberg at [email protected]
