Eye Witness Provides Lead on More Package Thieves

mailthiefheader

As we’ve reported recently, mail and package thefts, especially at local apartment buildings, have spiked lately.  But vigilant residents can be, and have been, a huge help.  Yesterday, we received another report from a resident who became an eye witness on Thursday, December 10, and gained some valuable clues for tracking down at least one pair of the local package thieves (apparently the same pair that included the woman photographed in a Cloverdale Ave. apartment lobby in late November).  The witness has asked to remain anonymous, since these specific thieves have not yet been caught, but he gave us permission to post his report:

Our building on Cochran, near 3rd and La Brea, has had a spate of mail thefts in the last 10 days and our manager posted a surveillance screen shot of the thief on our building’s door to deter her. Fate intervened last night as I was exiting with my dog JUST as said thief was walking away from her own picture on the door. Long story long, I hurried out to the street and stood right in front of her accomplice’s car – a [black] convertible 2016 BMW 2 series 228i, tagged 7LBB817.
I stared at the plates, then at the driver, who looked like he was going to crap himself. I stepped aside – as I had my dachshund (who was deputized soon thereafter) in my arms. He sped away, stopped a half a block down, saw we were chasing on foot, then started and stopped before speeding off down Cochran Ave.
My wife arrived at that moment, I gave her the info and she called our manager, who has contacted the police. I ran around our neighborhood, but they were not to be found. They hit our building twice in the last 10 days and this third visit was indeed charmed – for our residents. I hope the police have followed up on it, but if not, I want your readers to know the mail thieves in our area are an Asian couple driving in a convertible BMW, chucking holiday packages in their backseat as they drift up and down our streets!
Note that since he sent this report, the witness says he has learned that the car in question was a rental, so it’s less likely that the suspects are still driving it, or that the current drivers (if you see the car) are the suspects.
The witness further reports that the woman he saw coming out of the lobby does appear to be the same woman in the photos from the thefts on Cloverdale that we reported on earlier.  (Note, too, that these are not the same suspects apprehended in another similar case this week.) He said his building manager visited the Wilshire Division police station yesterday, but was told that they might have to transfer the case to a U. S. Postal Service inspector, who is  responsible for investigating thefts from USPS mail.  The police only handle thefts from other carriers, and the stolen packages were apparently from a mix of delivery services (including USPS).  The building manager in this case has also filed a phone complaint with the USPS.
