Street art seems to be all the rage these days…but while “rage” is sometimes the operative word, there’s also a lot of fun in many projects.  For example, we’ve been noticing a number of fancifully-painted electronic utility cabinets around the area, which turn these functional but drab boxes into something a  lot more decorative.
Last week, students at Melrose Math, Science and Technology Magnet got in on the fun, after the school held a contest sponsored by the Melrose Business Improvement District, in which students submitted their drawings for an opportunity to paint a utility box at Melrose Ave. and Detroit St., near the school, with noted street artist Justin Bua. Â Bua judged the contest and selected two students for the project, which took place last Thursday. Â Other students joined in to help with the painting and created their own chalk designs on adjacent sidewalks. Â (Melrose photos courtesy of Kim Sudhalter, Urban Legend PR)
