New Lassens Natural Foods and Vitamins Open at Wilshire/La Brea

After 21 months of anticipation (since it was first announced in May of 2014), the new Lassens Natural Foods and Vitamins store is now open in the Essex Wilshire-La Brea development at Wilshire and La Brea.  The store, which is now in a soft-open phase and will celebrate its Grand Opening next week, is the second largest of the three Lassens stores in Los Angeles (the other two are in Los Feliz and Echo Park).

The Lassens mission, according to its website, is to “nourish family and community by providing the best of everything good” while supporting “sustainable and responsible environmental practices.” Lassens has a total of 12 locations in California, with the next new store scheduled to open in San Luis Obispo in April.

The centerpiece of the Wilshire/La Brea store is a large prepared-foods deli, which Doug Hernandez, executive chef for the Lassens chain, says is the “best” among the three Los Angeles locations…”if not the whole chain.”

According to Andrew MacKay, assistant store manager at the Wilshire/La Brea location, Lassens offers more organic foods than many of its competitors – about 90% of the items at its salad bar are currently organic, and soon that will rise to 100%…for salad items as well as soups and juices.  The store also features a bakery, butcher counter, a large selection of bulk foods, and a lot of grab-and-go prepared foods…in addition to standard grocery items, fresh produce, and dairy items.  According to MacKay, popular items with customers so far are the huge selection of bottled waters and coconut waters, kombucha, gluten-free foods, health and beauty products and cold press juices.

Next week’s Grand Opening celebration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, sales, raffles and lots of demonstrations with free samples.  Parking inside the Wilshire-La Brea development (enter from 8th Street or Sycamore Ave.) is free with validation.

  1. It’s great having a MARKET nearby! For me, especially – I don’t have to cook dinner “for one” (myself) – I just hit the “hot bar” and the “salad bar.” And it was not super expensive. Other Sycamore Square neighbors seem to agree with me – I’ve already run into a few of them – all at the “hot bar.”
