The LAPD’s Wilshire and Olympic Divisions reported a variety of crimes over the past few weeks, most of them motor vehicle theft or break-ins which have increased some 35% in 2015 according to the LAPD.

The screenshot of today’s CrimeMap (above) of crimes in the past week shows a beautifully clear space in the greater Wilshire / Hancock Park area of Los Angeles where few crimes occurred. CrimeMapping is an interactive up-to-date map which one can search by entering a street address.

One murder occured when on June 17  at 3:35 am, Wilshire Officers responded to the 1700 block of Longwood Ave, where a bicyclist was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Any information regarding this crime should be directed to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or West Bureau Homicide Detectives at (213) 382-9470.

The LAPD also reports that criminals are using cheap electronic “power amplifiers” to activiate car key fobs from a distance. Criminals have been seen on surveillance footage and by victims, easily gaining access to automobiles parked in driveways and garages, using the amplifier to transfer the signal from your car to your key, which could be inside your home or your pocket.  The solution? Get rid of your fob, or put it in a “Faraday” bag that blocks electronic signals. Or pop it in the freezer or microwave to protect it from the signal. But you know how many of us will then ‘zap’ our keys or lose them forever in the depths of the freezer.
