By statute, the Supreme Court starts a new term on the first Monday in October. By coincidence, the Ebell of Los Angeles, one of the oldest women’s clubs in the country, centrally located in our neighborhood, opens its season of cultural, education and philanthropic programs as well.
Fittingly, the opening day luncheon will feature a panel discussion “Women Leaders Making a Difference in Our City,” moderated by Mary Melton, Editor-in-Chief of Los Angeles Magazine. Joining Melton is Rebecca Ninburg, Vice President, City of Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women and co-founder of Los Angeles Derby Dolls; Sargent II Emada E. Tingirides, Los Angeles Police Department and Stacy Taylor, Battalion Chief/Paramedic, Los Angeles Fire Department. The panel will explore the role of women in shaping our city’s quality of life and addressing the challenges facing us in the future.
Luncheon programs generally begin at 11:30 am with social time, programs start promptly at 12 noon and typically conclude by 1:30 pm. There is ample free parking on Lucerne Blvd across from the main entrance. Â Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for non-members and can be reserved online at www.ebelleventtickets.com.Â
The Ebell of Los Angeles was founded in 1887. Â Its members seek to maintain and preserve the historic clubhouse while offering programs that engage both members and the community at large. Ebell members also make annual grants to women’s social service organizations from a Rest Cottage Association Philanthropy group, and provide scholarships to students in Los Angeles County colleges through the Ebell Scholars Program. Last year, nearly $400,000 was granted. The Ebell has been ushering in the season since 1927 at Lucerne and Wilshire Blvd. There are over 400 active members and room for many more. Membership inquiries are welcome. For more information contact Meredyth Deighton at [email protected]
