Writer Talia Bolnik, came upon her clever, entrepreneurial concept of creating a cooperative writing space out of her own search for a place to write her book. Tired of the loneliness of working at home and the distractions of working in public spaces like coffee shops, Bolnik came up with the idea of creating a co-working space for serious writers. Fortuitously, her mom, Suzanne Phillips, owned a building right off Larchmont and was willing to help Talia create the Hatchery Press. Located at 5611 Clinton Street, just around the corner from Larchmont and Clinton, the space is designed just for writers, but all kinds of writers, who might enjoy working in a different spaces and interacting with other writers.
The Hatchery isn’t just for writers who are just starting out, Bolnik has signed up a number of members who have solid writing credits. “Writers don’t make a huge amount of money,” said Bolnik. “You’d be surprised the number of successful writers who need a place to work.”
In addition, to providing 24/7 access to a variety of work spaces, free coffee and tea and wifi all over the building, The Hatchery also provides classes and workshops for writers. It’s not all work though, Thursday night is movie night. Bolnik is working through the Rotten Tomatoes list of most overlooked films of 2014.
“I grew up here, I want to be part of the community and create a community that relates to the residential neighborhood and get to know our neighbors,”said Bolnik who welcomes everyone to come check out the space or just drop buy and say hello.
