There were eight reports of break-ins to cars and property stolen in Hancock Park in the last week, according to Cindy Chvatal-Keane, President of the Hancock Park Homeowners Association.  Residents throughout the area, including those on Rossmore, June Street, Cahuenga, Las Palmas and Lillian Way reported thefts to the association’s security committee members or block captains.  In most cases, the vehicles were in the driveway of the home; one was even behind a locked gate. Only one resident reported not locking the car. In another incident, two bikes were stolen after a wrought iron gate was ripped off by thieves. Another was reported on Arden in Windsor Square as well.

However, few of these crimes appear on the LAPD Crimemapping and Comstat website, which shows the most recent crime data reported to the Los Angels Police Department.  While some crime victims say reporting crimes can be a hassle, and they’ve experienced long wait times for police to arrive in non-emergency situations, reporting is still extremely important.  If crime victims don’t report, the crimes won’t show up in official statistics, and an accurate picture of the area’s crime activity will not be created.

“We encourage all our residents to please report these crimes so there is an accurate record of crime in our neighborhood,” said Chvatal-Keane. “However, these crimes often do not get reported, for various reasons, but mainly because it is so difficult to make the police report.” Chvatal-Keane said she has sent an email to local LAPD officials, asking what  can be done to make reporting a crime easier for both the victim and the Wilshire division staff.

  1. It is in the interests of home sellers and their real estate agents to keep crime reporting low so as to make it appear that an area is very safe and worthy of a premium on the sale price. PLEASE REPORT CRIME. It’s real. It has to be mitigated.
