North Larchmont Boulevard, or  “NOLA” as many like to call it,  is getting a new look next week when work begins on a series of green-scaped medians stretching from Melrose south to Rosewood. The project will include a stone “tower” identifying the area as Larchmont, reflecting the tower at the corner of Larchmont and Third Streets to the south. NOLA is alive with activity these days with diners at Cafe Gratitude, Lemonade and Coffee + Food, and shoppers at the quaint resale shops Ampersand and Bluebird.

In the second phase of an MTA grant that Council District 4 has helped shepherd through the city and neighborhood processes, the Bureau of Street Services will begin work next week with a groundbreaking ceremony hosted by Councilman Tom LaBonge on Monday morning, August 12th at 8:30 am.

“There will be two short segments of median between Melrose and Clinton,” Ben Seinfeld, Deputy Director in Councilman Tom LaBonge’s office told the Buzz, “and will continue south with a long 250 foot stretch of median between Clinton and Rosewood. We don’t know the exact work schedule yet, but believe the work will all be done by the end of the year.”

The Bureau of Street Services will work first building the hardscape, followed by DWP installation of the irrigation, and then Street Services putting in the plantings. According to Seinfeld, the Larchmont Village Neighborhood Association (LVNA)  has agreed to help maintain the medians, just as the Windsor Square Association to the south has a hand in upkeep there. Details on the types of trees and shrubs will be revealed on Monday at the groundbreaking ceremony, which all are welcome to attend.

  1. Nobody calls it NOLA. Absolutely nobody. Nobody is ever going to call it NOLA, God willing. Please stop with the NOLA. Call it Larchmont Heights or Upper Larchmont if you must call it something.

  2. I agree with Patrick. I’ve never heard a soul call it NOLA. Upper Larchmont is not a bad idea, but NOLA appears desperate to self-identify with an image.

I’m excited to see the median completed on north Larchmont Blvd. LaBonge has always been great for Windsor Square and the surrounding neighborhoods.

  3. As an added bonus, our friends at Peets coffee will be serving coffee to those who venture out at 8:30 for this very special event! A big thank you in advance to Peets.
