Dozens of volunteers fanned out across the greater Wilshire area Thursday night to count homeless people who are living on our nearby streets.  Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) dropped by the assembly site and thanked the volunteers for helping with count. Bloom said the LA County count is vital to understanding the issue and developing solutions because 1 in 8 of the nation’s homeless live in the city of Los Angeles.

The local counting effort was organized by Joe Hoffman, GWNC board member and Windsor Village resident. Hoffman recruited more than 40 people, including thee other GWNC members, Patti Carroll, Greg Wittmann and Betty Fox.

“It was great to see such a diverse group of people engaged in this challenging cause,” said Hoffman in a thank-you note to volunteers on Friday. “With a smaller-than-anticipated group, we managed to successfully count all but two of our 19 census tracts. A special thanks to those teams that doubled-up on tracts and those who went out a second time and counted additional tracts. Your energy and perseverance made for a very successful count in the Greater Wilshire area.”
