Logan, Michael and Kathy.

Providing a welcome addition to the community, Owners Michael Knowles and Kathy Huynh Knowles, Larchmont Village residents since 2012, opened the doors of Knowles Karate Academy officially on June 1st. Within a week and a half, they already had 30 enthusiastic students signed up. Following a refreshing transformation, the corner space, which is now the studio at 3rd and Manhattan, is light, airy and bright. Students have ample space to practice on the cushioned mats, and can check to ensure proper form is being achieved, in the large mirrors.Together with their son Logan, who recently celebrated his fourth birthday at the studio, Michael and Kathy have happily opened a new chapter – both within the community, and within their own lives.

Hailing from Southern New Jersey, Michael has trained in Martial Arts since 1990. He obtained his third degree blackbelt in April 2012, and became a Certified Instructor of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan in April 2016. In between, Michael has been a member of Team USA’s Roller Hockey team, an accomplished actor, writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and acting/writing coach. After moving to Los Angeles in 2008, Michael also invented a Camera Support and Stabilization System, known as Atlas Camera Support – an invention he and his wife Kathy patented, and have been successfully selling worldwide. Michael and Kathy also have a film production company (dragonbabyproductions), named after their son, Logan.

Kathy was born in Saigon. She escaped with her family, as a young girl in the late 1970’s – fleeing Communist rule in Vietnam. She resettled in Canada, and later completed her university studies in Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion. She worked at Club Monaco, and was eventually transferred to New York City. During her 18 years in the Fashion Industry, Kathy became the youngest senior executive at a Fortune 500 company. She eventually decided to leave the business behind to pursue a different path, translating her ability to manage and lead, into helping people learn and grow – and motivating them to achieve their best with Knowles Karate Academy.

“Becoming parents made us realize how important it is to provide an environment that is safe, positive and supportive for kids to learn and develop,” shared Kathy. “We wanted to create a space where both kids AND adults could gain self-confidence and respect, not only for themselves, but for their fellow human beings. A space where the community can come together to connect, inspire, support and enrich each other’s lives.”

practicingform“My favorite part of coming to Knowles Karate Academy, is practicing correct form,” shared current karate student, Aaliyah, age 11. Aaliyah was the very first student to sign up at the current studio location. The very next day, Aaliyah’s friend, Angel, also joined.

punchlungeWhen asked his favorite thing about coming to Knowles Karate Academy, student Elisha, age 10, said “Everything!” Elisha was in Los Angeles visiting his grandmother for the summer, when he started coming to Knowles Karate Academy. Now, he will be staying and continuing through December, sometimes participating in 2 to 3 classes a day!

As Head Instructor, Michael shares…we are teaching “more than just punching and kicking…we hope to help our students find balance and inner peace, which will ultimately help the community find more balance and peace.” It is the Knowles Karate Academy goal to help students develop higher levels of confidence, focus and self-discipline, too.

Embark on a new chapter of your own journey, together with Knowles Karate Academy, and find your harmonious balance.

“The goal is not to become better than someone else.  It is to become a better person than you were yesterday.”
