Cirque du Soleil Mesmerizes

I can’t believe there isn’t more buzz about the Cirque du Soleil show IRIS.  Just a couple miles north of Hancock Park at the Kodak Theater, the show is a dazzlingly beautiful and jaw-dropping experience of cinema, acrobatics, dance, theater and music. I got to see it last week and it gave me goosebumps, lodged my heart in my throat, made me laugh aloud, and wonder… what kind of minds brought this crazy, whimsical, fantastical dream to life? Why – the Cirque du Soleil of course.

I sat between an 85 year old man and a five year old girl, and both were also under the spell of the troupe’s exceptional aerobatics, staging and music. There’s not much of a storyline, but some fun poking at the egocentricity of the movie business (right there on the home stage of the Oscars!) My favorite piece: the cityscape that has cops and robbers springing off trampolines in ways that looked like a film reel being played in reverse. But best of all are the human bodies that fly right overhead,  in perfect synchronicity, doing things we mere mortals can only dream of.

See a preview of the show on the Cirque du Soleil site or read the LA Times Culture Monster review. If you’ve been already, it’s fun to check out the before-and-after photos of the cast, and the Interactive Graphic of segments of the show.
