It may be our little corner of the world  – Wilshire and Fairfax – but the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is certainly making national headlines for a couple of projects in the works that will change the face of what many of us consider our ‘local’ digs. We love dropping into LACMA on a whim – maybe just to see one exhibit, or to catch free music on Friday and Saturday in the pavillion, or for a quick lunch in the open, airy cafeteria.
There are lots of exciting changes in the works under Director Michael Govan. The Academy of Motion Pictures announced plans to move its museum, originally slated for a two block site in Hollywood, to the former May Company building that commands the Southwest corner of the LACMA property. You can already imagine plans for a giant gold Oscar statuette to peer down on the busy intersection – the curved backdrop of gold mosaic is already there just waiting for its spotlight!
But that’s not all. The ROCK is headed our way – Â And this truly is a rock! The centerpiece of sculptor Michael Heizer’s monolithic piece “Levitated Mass” is a 340 ton stone that is making its logistically-challenged route from 60 miles out in Riverside to its new Wilshire Boulevard home.
