The Western Cup III Quidditch Tournament will take place this Saturday and Sunday (March 10 and 11, 2012) on the intramural field at UCLA. It is expected to be the largest quidditch tournament ever held west of the Mississippi and will include teams from the Claremont Colleges, USC, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford, Moorpark College and Arizona State. These teams are serious!
Matches start at 10 a.m. and go on all day. I am planning on bringing my eleven and eight-year-old boys with their brooms. In their words, watching a real live quidditch match will be “epically awesome” and the games are free.
The tournament is proud to be sponsored by Whimsic Alley purveyor of all things Harry Potter located right here at 5464 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. Check out their website to get a taste of what they offer online and in store – we’ll be doing a story on this unique business in a future Buzz post.
Apparently, fans of the game aren’t all kids. When I checked out the Tournament’s Facebook amongst queries about broom length and regulations, I found one comment that said, “If I could marry this page, I would.”

Let the games begin – witches and wizards, and muggles join in!
