If cleaning out your closets is part of your New Year’s get-organized routine (or even if it’s not, but should be), the Big Sunday volunteer organization has a great way to help with your project – its 5th Annual MLK Day Clothing Collection and Community Breakfast, on Monday, January 16 (the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday), starting at 9 a.m.

To gear up for the event, Big Sunday is currently collecting new and gently-used clothes, which will be distributed to “thousands of grateful, struggling people” throughout the city.  At the event on Monday, volunteers will help sort the donations while sharing breakfast and community spirit.  The will also be live music, courtesy of the Blue Breeze Band, and a chance to participate in the “Something in Common” photo project. All ages are welcome, and there is no charge to attend…just RSVP.

If you can’t attend on the 16th, but would still like to donate clothes, you can drop things off before the big day at the Big Sunday office, 6111 Melrose Ave., Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or on Saturdays, from noon to 2 p.m. All kinds of new and used clothes, child and adult sizes, are welcome…but please make sure socks and underwear are new only.

Financial sponsorships for the effort are also available, starting at $1,000 each.  If you’d like to be a sponsor, please contact [email protected].

According to Big Sunday, “This is a great way to celebrate the spirit of Dr. King and to celebrate the fact that we’re all in it together!”
