Celebrate National Ice Cream Day this Sunday on Larchmont

The local “scoop” on National Ice Cream Day

Sunday is National Ice Cream. We couldn’t think of a better way to prepare to celebrate than to visit Larchmont’s two scoop shops and check out what they were planning to do to celebrate the day.

Salt & Straw at 240 N Larchmont is planning a day of random rewards to ice cream patron who stop by the shop.  Manager Ian Kane, featured in our video below demonstrating the “perfect scoop,” said they will giving away a different special treat or commemorative item to one lucky, randomly selected winner every hour. Prizes will include ice cream scoops, flights, pints, scoopers, t-shirts, and hats; winners can choose to cash in their prize right away or be given a gift card to take with them and use in the future.

Kane and fellow staffer, Lacey Yocham, who also scoops a perfect cone, shared their perfect scoop technique with the Buzz. It starts with a tiny scoop at the top, which acts a bit like an adhesive making sure the ice cream stays in the cone and you’ll have ice cream all the way to the very end of the cone! Check out our video below of the perfect scoop of Blackberries and birthday cake crumble.

Down the street, or up, depending on the direction you are heading, Alex Cleveland, manager of Jeni’s Ice Creams at 123 N Larchmont, showed us how she makes their amazing waffle cones. Once they start baking, the aroma of baking cones starts wafting down the street drawing you into the store! We admit, that size cone seems intimidating, but Jeni’s offers a waffle wedge with every full scoop, so you can have your waffle and eat your ice cream too!

To celebrate National Ice Cream Day, Jeni’s is offering a special kids scoop deal, that’s not just for kids! For every adult buying a scoop or cone at Jeni’s, the kids in tow will get a free kids scoop, in the classic orange cake cone with sprinkles. Alex Warheit, aspiring writer/improv sketcher best known for his work as Anthony Goldstein, Ravelclaw, Jewish Wizard and part-time ice cream scooper, demonstrated the Jeni’s technique scooping Wildberry Lavender ice cream into a cake cone topped with orange sprinkles.

The brand-new kid cones are part of Jeni’s new kids menu for $4.50, at the Los Angeles shops after July 16th.

What better way to check out National Ice Cream Day on Sunday than to visit our two local scoop shops. We’re picturing lines of happy neighbors enjoying ice cream on both sides of the street! Both shops are open from 11am – 11pm daily.

Thanks to our photographer/editor Joe Lombard who had to taste a few ice cream cones in the line of duty. Follow his film @FoundinEagleRockFilm.
