Metro invites you to celebrate the 50% construction completion milestone for Purple Line Extension Transit Project, Section 1! ‘Halfway to La Cienega’ is a free community event, open to the public, that will take place on Sunday, June 2 on the Great Lawn of the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be live entertainment, games, giveaways, food trucks and a family fun zone. Free food samplings will be provided by Metro’s Eat Shop Play partners Continental Kitchen, Rocco’s Neighborhood Pizza, Milk Jar Cookies and Book My Lot’s Happy Ice.

Plus, you won’t want to miss a plethora of engaging performances form local artists:

Dexter Story & Wondem: On his debut Soundway Records release, Story distills his diverse background in soul, funk, jazz and folk idioms into his own unique and worldly voice. Borrowing from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya, this collection of East African-influenced music is a testament to Story’s decades of dedication to artistic excellence.

The Blasting Company: While strong inflections rich in Eastern European folk tradition are identifiable, their music possesses a ‘here and now’ sensibility, drawn from genres rooted in North America. It is music that is original in style and combines a consistent jazz groove with an infectious exuberance that propels it forward. With an electricity rarely felt, even in live performance, it is the very definition of ‘good time music’ and it is entertainment at its best.

Korean Classical Music and Dance Company: An intricate, stylized fan dance in the finest tradition of the Korean court and a thrilling drum dance featuring unison drumming on suspended drums are just two of the offerings that grace the rich and varied repertoire of this exquisitely costumed ensemble. This splendidly costumed ensemble boasts a rich and varied repertoire of exciting dances that are presented with the grace and elegance characteristic of this ancient traditional dance form.

La Junta: A Spanish translation of ‘the gathering’ serves as both the widely popular brand name of Los Angeles outdoor cultural celebrations that feature tropical Afro-Latin music, and as the moniker of the four-person team that produces the series and other related deejay/live music events. Music lovers, fervent dancers and casual listeners alike will find themselves on an irresistible musical sojourn across Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, India, and through our stateside metropolises, all while the seamless blending of rhythms, food and sunshine conjure big smiles and even bigger dance moves.

The nine-mile Purple Line Extension Project is being constructed in three sections. The first section, currently under construction, will extend the subway 3.92 miles. It is expected to begin operations by 2023 and will connect Koreatown to Beverly Hills.
