City Map Shows Free Tax Prep Services

Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin, whose office compiles and publicizes all kinds of interesting city data, yesterday released a new map showing where Angelenos can find free resources to help prepare for the upcoming April 17 income tax deadline.

The map, available at lacontroller.org/freetaxprep , displays 116 locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area, incluing public libraries, IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance centers, and Free Tax Prep L.A. sites, at which anyone who needs help doing their taxes can find resources.

In a press release announcing the map release, Galperin said, “As City Controller, my office works to help secure the financial future of the City of Los Angeles, and it is vital that Angelenos have the tools and knowledge to plan for and to secure their own financial futures…The financial health of a city depends on financially secure residents. ”

The map’s resources are available to all Angelenos, but are specifically aimed at those who may qualify for the State and Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which can provide up to $9,000 in cash back for households with annual incomes of $54,000 or less.  According to the most recent data, California taxpayers leave more than $2 billion in EITC dollars unclaimed annually.

According to yesterday’s announcement, the tax resource map is “part of an ongoing effort by Galperin
to map City resources and present data in clear, concise and usable ways.”  It’s just one of many such resources on the City Controller’s wonderful rabbit hole of a website, where you can also find lots of other fascinating information…such as a map of all city-owned properties, a tool that shows maps of population, income, mixed-use development permits and more by city council district…and also such varied items as euthanasia statistics at city animal shelters, park grades, LGBTQ youth resources, a real-time airplane noise map, on which you can watch planes coming and going from LAX and see how loud they are in the neighborhoods they’re flying over…and much, much more.
