Under the umbrella of “Neighbors Lifting Neighbors,” the Interfaith & Community Collaborative will present its first event aimed at educating the community on homelessness. “Stories from the Frontline” will take place tonight, February 20, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church, 540 South Commonwealth Avenue. The program will be repeated on Sunday, February 24 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The event will feature a first person story of recovery from homelessness and a presentation by Tommy Newman, from the United Way’s Everyone In effort. Newman will talk about the solutions to homelessness currently underway in the city. In addition, Angie Aramayo, from Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office, will also speak.Â
Last month a group of local religious and community leaders meet at the home of philanthropist and homeless housing advocate Marilyn Wells, to plan cooperative events to educate people and build support for affordable housing and supportive housing. At that gathering, Wells and collaborator Allison Schallert welcomed almost a dozen leaders from local churches, faith groups and non-profits working to help feed and house the homeless, to discuss working together to host events that would raise public awareness.
The events are free and open to anyone who wants to learn more about solutions to homelessness.
