Stories about two local houses on the market caught our attention this week. In case you missed them, here’s the scoop.
The spectacular 8 bedroom, 5 bathroom, 9,918 square foot Higgins-Verbeck-Hirsch House — also known as Historic-Cultural Monument No. 403 — is on the market for $4,495,000, for the first time in 23 years.  The distinctive Windsor Square mansion at 637 S. Lucerne has a wonderful history, recounted in an LA Weekly story that asks “why hasn’t anyone snapped this house up?”
“It’s the biggest bang for your buck” said realtor Brenda Chandler Cooke.
But according to Cooke, most young buyers today want contemporary architecture with one large room that spills into another. Too bad! This house has spectacular architectural details that could never be replicated.
The second notable house story, close to Larchmont at 101 N. Beachwood Drive, is the 3,436-square-foot former home of Antonia Yager, who was found stabbed to death there, with no sign of forced entry.
The crime is still unsolved, but the Yager home is wonderful house on a double lot, with an impressive vaulted entryway, Batchelder fireplace, hardwood floors throughout, and multiple stained glass windows—including an arresting circular skylight, according to Curbed LA.
Realtor Shar Penfold told the Buzz today that the house is in escrow and she’s optimistic for a happy ending for this property.
