Thursday was the first day of school in their new location for students of Rhodes School of Music which moved from upper Larchmont into the Village at 215 N Larchmont Blvd on the second floor above Burger Lounge. The Buzz caught up with owner and founder David Rhodes who gave us a tour of the new space that features multiple spaces for private and group lessons as well as access to two outdoor balconies for parents waiting for their students.

“I like this much better,” enthusiastically said one young student waiting for her lesson.

The move down the street from their previous location at the Leimert office building at Clinton and Larchmont, gives Rhodes’s staff and students better access to the building for their classes in the evenings and on the weekends. And, the school’s increased visibility on the street has already brought in a few new students, explained Rhodes, though most come from word of mouth.

Rhodes, a pianist and composer with a Masters Degree from Cal Arts, started the school in 2012. He’d been giving in-home lessons and realized that Larchmont was in the center of most of his teaching area. He started with a small space and was prodded by his landlord to grow a bit as he got more successful and a bit noisier. Now there are over 200 students and 20 part-time teachers with three office staff in the new location teaching.

“We are open 7 days a weeks, another reason the move the Village made more sense” said Rhodes. “We are excited to be right next door to the Larchmont Farmers Market which could be very convenient for parents who want their students to take music lessons while they shop every Sunday.”

The school teaches students of all ages with teachers (BFAs, MFAs, and DMAs). They offer lessons in piano, guitar, drums, voice, electronic music,
electric bass, upright bass, trumpet, cello, violin, viola, flute, clarinet, audio production and saxophone.
