GWNC Opposes Jane Club, Supports Neighborhood Council Reforms Proposed by CD4 Council Member Ryu

GWNC Board meeting at the Ebell of Los Angeles votes to formally oppose the operation of the Jane Club in a residential neighborhood and supports reform of neighborhood council system.

The board of the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council conducted its monthly board meeting at the Ebell of Los Angeles on Wednesday evening with a relatively light agenda.

The board took action on a several recommendations from the Land Use Committee. The Board also voted unanimously to approve a motion opposing the use of R-1 residential properties for uses other an residential specifically naming the Jane Club at 236 S Larchmont Blvd. motion passed unanimously. They also voted unanimously to approve a motion to oppose a project at 856-870 Gramercy Place because the developer did not appear at the meeting with evidence of community support. The Land Use Committee had recommended support of the project with the caveat the developer would conduct outreach to the community and present the results to the board.

The board is in the process of preparing for neighborhood council elections next year. They voted to prepare a community impact statement supporting the recommendations proposed by CD 4 Council Member David Ryu to improve the neighborhood council system. The reforms proposed by Ryu include investigating the feasibility of allowing holding all Neighborhood Council elections on the same day in order to provide for a uniform citywide advertising and outreach campaign. Currently the elections are scheduled on nine different days.

In other actions, the board  approved a motion to hold a Town Hall on Soft-Story buildings prior to the August 8 board meeting from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

LAPD Officer Hebel Rodriguez reported there were 34 crimes reported in his car area in June. The most prevalent crime was thefts from cars. Rodriguez said laptops and purses have been reported stolen from vehicles. He urged board members to remind their neighbors to remove their personal items from their cars.

The next meeting of the board is August 8 at the Ebell of Los Angeles. All are welcome to attend.
