Hancock Park Crime Update

Crime-2

Private security firm SSA, which services several of our local neighborhoods, has issued notices of several recent crimes in the Hancock Park and La Brea-Hancock areas.  According to the SSA report, the incidents include:

  • Between 8 p.m on January 7 and 10 a.m. on January 8, three cars parked behind a locked gate on the 500 block of Lorraine were broken into, but the only thing stolen was about $20 in coins left in the car to pay for parking meters.  All three cars had been left unlocked, and no signs of forced entry were found.
  • A home in the 300 block of N. June St was burglarized on Friday evening, January 13, at 8:50pm.  The homeowner was in Palm Springs for the weekend, and the live-in housekeeper left the home at 6:30 p.m. The intruder climbed the eight-foot iron gates and then an eight-foot block wall to gain entry to the property’s inner garden/pool area. From there, he crawled through a doggie door without tripping the door alarm. However, motion sensors set the alarm off as the intruder went upstairs to the master bedroom. He ransacked drawers, took some inexpensive watches and cufflinks, and two decorative antique wood boxes that were locked but had nothing inside them.  SSA Security responded to the alarm in three minutes and cleared the house. When they saw muddy footprints and the drawers in disarray, SSA called LAPD to come out for a report and fingerprints…but none were found (the intruder may have worn gloves).
  • On Sunday, January 15, there was a home invasion at 12:30 a.m. on the 500 block of Lillian Way.  The victims were home at the time and asleep on the second floor of the home, when they were awakened by the sound of someone walking up the stairs.  They asked who was there and an unknown male voice stated “I’m terribly sorry. I have a 12 year old daughter. Don’t come down or I’ll pop you.” They told the suspect to leave. When they heard him doing so, they called 911. An LAPD helicopter arrived approximately five minutes later, followed quickly by SSA security…but the suspect was not found, and no description was available.  It was determined that the burglar probably entered and exited the property through a side gate leading to the rear yard, which was found open.  The suspect apparently entered the home through an unlocked kitchen door, and collected items from the living room, including a cell phone, victims’ wallets and contents, keys and other miscellaneous property. There were no alarms or security cameras operating at the time.  Also, except for the wallet, its contents and the keys, all other items taken were recovered from parkway plants just north of the home.
  • At 2:45 p.m. a package was stolen from a residence at 500 N. McCadden.
  • Sometime during the night of January 12-13, a car was stolen from the 500 block of Lillian Way.
  • Around 7:21 p.m. an unknown suspect entered a home on the 600 block of S. Mansfield while the residents were out.  Security cameras show a man entering through a low pedestrian gate.  He moved out of the camera’s view after thaty, but apparently spent about two minutes trying unsuccessfully to jimmy the lock on the front door gate before leaving.  The lock was damaged and the victims’ key would not work when they returned  home.

SSA’s reports remind everyone to keep homes and vehicles locked at all times to discourage break-ins, and not to leave any valuables in cars.  Also, they recommend home alarm and camera security systems whenever possible.  Please also remember to report ALL criminal activity, no matter how small, to LAPD.  The police can only track criminal activity and plan appropriate law enforcement response when they know what’s happening in our neighborhoods.
