Hancock Park Resident Saves Face

Marc Cohen and the Fateful Puck (center photo and story by Dr. Leo Gordon)

So, a doctor and a lawyer go to a hockey game…no, it’s not an intro to a joke, but a story we got this morning from a Buzz reader and long-time Windsor Square resident Dr. Leo Gordon about the time he and his good friend, local attorney Marc Cohen, recently attended a hockey game. But don’t let me spoil it. Read on…

A hockey puck is a 6 ounce, 3 by 1 inch frozen rubber vulcanized disc. When projected by a slap shot (a shot in which the play winds up to “slap” the puck at the goal-net) the puck travels about one hundred miles per hour.

These facts were in place when prominent Hancock Park attorney Marc Cohen invited prominent Hancock Park surgeon Leo Gordon to a recent hockey game.

It was to be a fateful night for both locals. During the second period of the game, a player with a clear shot at the goal net came to a sudden stop on the ice. He reared back his stick. The puck lay motionless on the ice. The slap shot was underway. The player’s stick made perfect contact. As the frozen disc sped towards the net, an opposing player thrust his stick into its path deflecting the puck directly towards our two neighbors.

But Gordon was not watching the oncoming puck. At the very instant the stick made contact with the puck, he had put his head down to enjoy the low calorie carbonated soft drink that had graciously been purchased for him by attorney Cohen. With cat-like reflexes mirroring his laser-like legal mind, Cohen thrust his hand in front of Gordon’s head. “A loud “thwap” emanated from Section 10.  Gordon resumed his sitting position wondering why Cohen’s hand was in front of his face.

A crowd gathered around attorney Cohen vigorously congratulating him on his life saving intervention.

This was a rare role reversal wherein an attorney had saved the life of a physician.

Gordon resumed enjoying his low calorie carbonated beverage reveling in the fact that we live in a neighborhood in which everyone watches out for everyone else.

“I’ve lived in the neighborhood 39 years and read all kinds of local news stories, but I thought maybe there was a place for a nice human interest story about two friends from the neighborhood,” Gordon told the Buzz when we called him for more details. We wanted to know if Cohen’s hand got hurt when he caught the puck. It didn’t. Cohen’s hand is just fine, explained Gordon, who added that he had a lot of fun writing the story.

Thanks to Dr. Gordon for sharing this story with us. That’s just what we love about our neighborhood, too.
