LA Phil Celebrates 100th Birthday at Ciclavia on Sunday

This coming Sunday, September 30, two of L.A.’s best-loved institutions – the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Ciclavia open streets celebration – are teaming up to throw a huge public party to celebrate the opening of the world famous orchestra’s 100th season.  The CelebrateLA edition of Ciclavia will connect the LAPhil’s two homes – the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall.  From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, an 8-mile route between the two landmarks will be closed to motorized traffic and open to “walk, run, skate, scoot, bike, and wander however you like!”

As with all Ciclavia events, there is no official start or end point – instead, you can jump in wherever you like and meander at your own pace along whichever part of the route you’d like to explore.  In addition, there will be six hubs along the route, where the celebration will blossom into an “epic festival” featuring food trucks, art installations, kid friendly activities, art projects, dancing and stages with live performances from more than 1,800 musicians, artists and dancers.  And finally, to cap off the day, the evening will end with a free concert at the Hollywood Bowl, where Gustavo Dudamel will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic and some very special guests – including Katy Perry, Herbie Hancock, Kali Uchis, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), and more.

The hubs include Walt Disney Concert Hall (Grand Ave. between 1st St. and 3rd St.), Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles in MacArthur Park (Park View St. between Wilshire Blvd. and 6th St, inside the park), Koreatown (Liberty Park at Wilshire Blvd. between Serrano Ave. and Oxford Ave.), Melrose (Melrose Ave. at N. Windsor Blvd.), Hollywood (Vine St. between Hollywood Blvd. and Yucca St.), and the Hollywood Bowl (Kagan Patio).

This event is so big, that it actually has two websites – one from LAPhil and one from Ciclavia – and even its own app (which you can use to create your own unique schedule for the day and set reminders for performance times, listen to a curated event playlist and more).  Check out any or all of them for more information, including how to get there, and where you can find the nearest bike rentals if you don’t have your own.

Finally, whether or not you’re going to join in the fun, it will be good to be aware of the street closures, which include:

  • Grand Ave. between 1st St. and Wilshire Blvd.;
  • Wilshire Blvd. between Grand Ave. and Western Ave.;
  • Western Ave. between Wilshire Blvd. and Melrose Ave.;
  • Melrose Ave. between Western Blvd. and Vine St.;
  • Vine St. between Melrose Ave. and Yucca St.

Note that Highland Avenue will not be closed. Also, a  shuttle service will connect the Hollywood Hub and the Hollywood Bowl.  And bike parking will be available at the Hollywood Hub.

Most streets will begin reopening at 4 pm, but the party will continue at the Grand Avenue Hub until 8:30 pm.

So come on out on Sunday and Celebrate LA!
