LAPD Advises Residents to Remove Keys from Tandem-Parked Cars

LAPD1

LAPD Senior Lead Officer Hebel Rodriguez told the Buzz earlier this week that there has been a slight increase recently in car thefts from the area…and one reason is that people sometimes leave keys in their cars, making them easy targets for thieves.

While most people would never consciously leave their main car key in their vehicle, Rodriguez said people do sometimes leave other keys there, whether consciously or unconsciously.

For example, he said, some car dealerships provide a plastic copy of the car’s key, which is inside the owner’s manual for the vehicle.  And people either don’t know the key is there, or they leave it in the manual, in the car, in case of emergencies.

Also, some people who own two or more vehicles, and frequently juggle them in and out of a tandem parking space or driveway, sometimes leave a key for one vehicle inside the other, so they always have access to keys for both cars, to make moving them easier.

Either of these practices can be dangerous, however. A thief needs only to break a window (or just enter the vehicle if it was also left unlocked) to find the key and drive away.

If you store a key in your car, for either that vehicle or another one parked nearby, please remove it to help remove temptation and access for would-be thieves.
