“Someone told me it’s all happening at the zoo
I do believe it
I do believe it’s true…”

If those lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel’s 1967 hit, ring true for you, (pun intended, of course!) then you may want to learn more about being a docent at the Los Angeles Zoo.

This Saturday, July 15 from 10:00 to 12:00pm there will be an information meeting about the Zoo’s docent program at Witherbee Auditorium at the Los Angeles Zoo. All that’s required is a curiosity for the natural world and an interest in inspiring others.

“This year marks my 25th as a docent,” Laurie Stoneman, June Street resident in Hancock Park, told the Buzz.  “Though I don’t tour the kids anymore, I still marvel at all the amazing facts that I keep learning about the natural world. The zoo has been a source of fun,  new friends and fascination for so many years, past and to come. I highly recommend it!”

This year, the docent class will be held on Wednesday and Saturday (attend one or the other) from October to April. New docents are expected to fulfill 100 volunteer hours a year, generally 3-4 hours one day a week touring school groups. There are also many other opportunities for involvement.

More information is available on the zoo website.   If you need more info, just ask, advises Stoneman.
