Learn More About LA’s New Home Sharing (Short Term Rentals) Ordinance – Starting Tonight

Last December, the Los Angeles City Council, after nearly three years of discussions, passed a new ordinance governing short term rentals (now officially referred to as “home sharing”) in the city.  The new law took effect on July 1, and since then we’ve been in an official startup period during which people wanting to legally rent spaces in their primary residences (the only kind of short term rentals now allowed) can register with the city.

And now that people have had a few months to register, enforcement of the new rules will begin on November 1.  We’ve written before about the basic provisions of the new home sharing law, but the City is also now holding several information sessions for people who want to learn more or who still have questions.

The first of these informational opportunities will take place this evening, Wednesday, October 9, in the form of a Twitter chat starting at 5 p.m.  You can follow along on the Planning Department’s Twitter page – @Planning4LA – or by following #HomeShareLA.  You can submit your questions, get live answers, and learn more about how to legally rent your space on platforms such as AirBnB and VRBO.

If you can’t make tonight’s Twitter chat, or perfer an in-person discussion, there will also be a series of community meetings that will provide information on the new ordinance, the rental registration process, eligibility criteria, required documentation and more.  You can RSVP online for any of the following sessions (all of which start at 6 p.m.):

October 16 – Silverlake Branch Library
October 17 – Windward School
October 22 – CD4 Hollywood Field Office
October 23 – North Hollywood Recreation Center
October 29 – Pio Pico/Koreatown Branch Library
November 6 – Ronald F. Deaton Civic Auditorium
November 7 – Angelus Mesa Branch Library

For the meeting addresses and other details, see the flier below.  For more details on the meetings or the home sharing ordinance, you can also contact planning.home-sharing.lacity.org, or call (213) 202-5464.  And if you’re having trouble with a short-term rental location in your neighborhood, there’s also a new 24/7 home sharing complaint hotline at (213) 267-7788.
