Local Artist Beatrice Novoa at Coffee + Food

An exhibition titled “On Election Year: Everything but the Kitchen Sink”  by local Windsor Square artist Beatrice Novoa will be showing during the month of October at Coffee + Food on Melrose at Larchmont Boulevard. The show will kick off this weekend with an opening for the public on Sunday, October 9, from 2-5 pm; the artist will be present and light food and drink will be provided by Coffee + Food.

Novoa’s show will include a dozen mixed media pieces in which she uses found objects, and acrylic and oil paints to create “stories on boards.” She will also show several etchings.

“The pieces are thematic in application and mechanics, but cover a wide range of stories,” Novoa told the Larchmont Buzz in a phone interview.

For the most part, Novoa works in the garage studio adjacent to her home, where she and partner Kimberly Higgins run their design firm Garret & Garage. The company provides interior design services for residential and commercial clients. Novoa says more and more clients are buying her artwork in addition to their design service, and it felt like a good time to share her work with the community at large.

“I’ve always had a studio to paint in,” she reminisced. “As young children in Spain, my parents provided my siblings and I easels and paints from the time we were very young. So in essence, I’ve been a painter my whole life.” Novoa was raised in Madrid by Cuban parents, and visited the Museo del Prado in Madrid almost weekly.

Novoa studied fashion in Paris, worked in pattern making and fashion in New York, had a line of furniture with old ateliers in Florence, and opened a furniture gallery in Miami, Florida. She has lived around the world but calls Los Angeles home now.

The painted canvases are dazzlingly colorful, and the embedded found objects add both whimsy and curiosity to her work. Drop in to Coffee + Food at 5630 Melrose Ave. this month for a taste of some really great coffee and some really fine artwork.
