A couple of months ago, we told you about the contest Metro was having to collect naming suggestions and artwork for the new subway Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that are now on their way to help build the new Purple Line Subway Extension. Well, the entries are in, and Metro is now presenting the finalists in both contests for a public vote to pick the winners.
Artwork entries were submitted by city students in grades K-5, while potential names for the twin TBMs were submitted by students in grades 6-12.

The finalist names are:
Castor and Pollux – Twins in Greek and Roman mythology who are the source of the names for the twin stars in the Gemini constellation.
Elsie & Soyeon – Two important female figures in engineering and space travel (Elsie Eavers and Yi Soyeon).
Abeona & Adiona – The Roman Goddesses of Outward Journeys (Abeona) and Safe Return (Abeona)
Rosa & Milagros – The Spanish words for “rose” (as well as a nod to civil rights hero Rosa Parks) and “miracle.”
Genesis & Nova – Words representing “the emergence and the beginning of something new” and something “different and out of this world.”

Finally, Metro also reports that “over the next several weeks parts of the Purple Line Extension tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will begin arriving at the Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and Galveston. From the ports, the various parts will be loaded onto large trucks and takento a holding facility until the Wilshire/La Brea station is ready to receive them.”
