October presents the perfect time to venture out to discover your City…maybe catch dinner at a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, while experiencing a different part of town. Or leave early Saturday morning, take your bike and go Metro (Purple Line to Union Station, to Gold Line) to Lincoln Heights for a real art adventure. Whatever you decide…there’s a lot of art to experience this month! Do make some time for it…

(Be sure to check out the comprehensive list of art happenings at the bottom of this post.)

Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk

Possibly the best-known art walk happens in the Historic Core – the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. Every second Thursday of the month, the event draws an estimated 25,000 visitors to downtown’s Historic Core/Gallery Row. Many of the Downtown Art Walk activities happen in and around the galleries predominantly on Spring and Main Streets, between 2nd and 9th Streets.

The self-guided Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk includes around 50 participating galleries, dozens of participating restaurants and other businesses, live art demonstrations, an Art Walk Lounge and loads of food trucks. This walk manages to be at once a huge block party and an event for the serious art collector given the breadth, quality and variety of the galleries in this burgeoning arts district.

Brewery Art Walk

The Brewery Art Walk is a twice annual open studio weekend at the world’s largest art complex. With over 100 participating resident-artists, you will have the opportunity to see new works, discover new favorites, speak with the artists and purchase artwork directly from the artists’ studios.

The next Brewery Art Walk takes place October 12-13th from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm in the Eastside neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. Admission is free and so is parking.

The creation of the Brewery Arts Complex began in 1982 at the site of the Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery. With the passing of the Artist-In-Residence code, artists could rent live/work space in industrially zoned buildings. From the start, they rented only to artists and that is still their policy to this day.

Beverly Hills ArtShow

The forty-year-old Beverly Hills Artshow features new artists, new demonstrations, and some returning favorites. Held along the four leafy blocks of the linear landmark park known as Beverly Gardens, the event takes place the weekend of October 19-20th.

A national recruitment process brings 240 new and returning artists from around Los Angeles and the rest of the country to this long lovely garden twice a year. From traditional painting to completely digital work, from tiny to massive ceramic, glass and sculptural pieces, artists personally represent and sell their work in eleven media categories. The show is known to feature stylistically adept work ranging from sharp, clean urban Pop objects to virtuosic California Plein Air painting.

The event includes a popular slate of local food trucks, the relaxing Wine & Dine Garden, the all-new Beer & Brat garden on the Rodeo Block, art demonstrations, and atmospheric music provide additional delight. Up to 50,000 patrons attend each show, but despite the crowds, the ambience is elegant and unhurried.
