The Ebell of Los Angeles will host award winning pianist Robert Thies in concert at the Historic Ebell of Los Angeles on Sunday, January 22 at 3:00 pm.
Thies, who now lives in Los Angeles, first captured worldwide attention in 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the only American pianist to win the first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn’s famed triumph in Moscow in 1958. He won accolades from the White House and the Los Angeles City Council declared February 16, 1996 as “Robert Edward Thies Day.”
“We are so fortunate to be in Los Angeles home to such talented artists who are available to perform in our historic Ebell space perfectly suited to an intimate concert,” said Jane Martin, chair of the Ebell program. Martin added that Thies will perform an exciting program entitled “Voyage through Europe,” featuring composers from Vienna, Moscow and Paris featuring the following works: Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Ravel and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue will close the program.
Thies has performed as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician as well as with orchestras throughout the world. His work can be heard in the score to the movie The Life of Pi and he was invited to join the North American tour of John Williams’ Star Wars in Concert. His recordings can be found on the Centaur, Albany, Golden Tone, and Denouement Records labels.
