Shanah Tovah or Happy New Year to all our neighbors who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the new year in the Jewish community. Today is the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish holiday which commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.
There are many different ways Jews celebrate the coming of a new year varying with each individual’s level of religious affiliation and observation of tradition. In our neighborhood we have very observant as well as not-so observant Jews.
One of the traditions observed by many Jews is eating apples dipped in honey which signifies our hopes for a sweet new year filled with hope, good health and happiness.
So to all our neighbors, we say, Shanah Tovah, may the new year be sweet. (And we at the Buzz are particularly partial to honey!)
