Today is National Voter Registration Day

Today is National Voter Registration Day, Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean C. Logan will be out at county-wide events helping people to register to vote.

Today is National Voter Registration Day and government offices as well as political groups around the country will be out in their local communities urging citizens to register to vote. The effort comes just 42 days before the midterm elections on November 6, 2018. Regardless of your politics, every can agree that everyone who can vote, should vote. So here’s a day to celebrate our right and privilege.

National Voter Registration Day was first observed in 2012 and has been growing in popularity every year since. The holiday has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). It is further supported by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED).

The holiday recognizes that every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. In an effort to make sure  everyone has the opportunity to vote, volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” today in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts. National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan will be participating in several National Voter Registration Day events throughout Los Angeles County including stops at USC, UCLA, Cal State LA, Spotify Campus,  several stops in the City of Pasadena including Pasadena City College and Santa Monica College.

If you are registered to vote, you should have received the Official Voter Information Guide in your mailbox or where ever you get snail mail. If not, check out Los Angeles County’s website to find out if you are registered. If not, you can start the process there with links to the California Secretary of State’s website. You can also request a VBM — an acronym for a “vote by mail” ballot. The deadline to request a vote by mail ballot is October 30.

If you’re motivated to do more, there are lots of groups focusing on grassroots political action and voter registration. Let America Vote, a grassroots political organization focused on getting more Americans to vote posted a short video on how you can organize voter registration effort in your community.
