Tree Trimming in Hancock Park

Newly planted trees in Hancock Park

CD4 Council Member David Ryu has given residents in Hancock Park some good news about the care of neighborhood tree canopy. According to a letter Ryu sent to residents:

“Tree trimming for the remaining street trees in Hancock Park will begin this Monday, July 2, 2018 and be completed by November 2018. Following previous trimming and years of negotiating with the City’s Urban Forestry Department, this final phase will complete tree trimming for the entire Hancock Park area. By the end of this final trimming contract, we will have trimmed over 2,200 trees in the Hancock Park neighborhood alone.”

“In this final phase of tree trimming, Urban Forestry and Mariposa will also be identifying dead and dying trees for removal. Fortunately, the Hancock Park Homeowners Association has agreed to replace any and all trees removed from Hancock Park in a manner that is consistent with the canopy of the street and the HPOZ requirements for the neighborhood. In order to make sure this process moves as smoothly as possible, I have decided to fund the expedited removal of dead or dying trees in a manner that is appropriate for the HPOZ, and with enough time for the Homeowners Association to identify proper replacements in their Master Tree Plan.

“We’ve been working on the tree canopy for as long as I can remember, Hancock Park Homeowners Association Est. 1948 President Cindy Chvatal-Keane told the Buzz.  “We will be replanting parkway trees starting in November.

In an email to residents, HPHA’48 said they will be in close contact with the Council Office while the trimming and removals are on going from July 2nd thru November 2018.

“It is our understanding all trees will be trimmed on the following streets:
Quad 1 Melrose to Rosewood – Wilcox to Lillian Way
Quad 2 Melrose to Beverly – McCadden to Muirfield
Quad 3 Hudson Ave and Place btw Beverly and 3rd
Quad 4 3rd to Wilshire – McCadden to Muirfield
According to the maps we were given Highland Ave will not be trimmed in this contract phase,” wrote the HPHA’48 in an email to residents.

In other tree news, the City’s Department of Urban Forestry wants to know what you think about the quality of our trees, as part of an effort to develop a framework for an Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) for the City of Los Angeles. A draft of the framework is expected in December 2018.
