Two recent calls for artists and artworks have crossed our desk recently, and are worth passing along to the artists in our community.
Public Art for the City of Los Angeles
First, the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is seeking new public art for outdoor open spaces, street medians and Dept. of Rec and Parks facilities, and will award grants between $40,000 and $100,000 for the work.
According to a press release from the city:
“Public art projects play a pivotal role in creating meaningful gathering places for both pleasure and purpose in L.A. neighborhoods. These community-based public artworks enhance recreational activities, create educational opportunities, and provide valuable cultural experiences for, adults, children, and seniors. DCA is now seeking to establish a pre-qualified list of artists, collectives, and artist teams interested in creating contemporary public artwork in traditional and non-traditional outdoor open spaces, street medians, and recreation and parks facilities.”

Criteria
Artists working in any media may apply, individually or as an artist team. The sites where the art would be placed are particularly conducive for three-dimensional artworks. Successful applicants must demonstrate the professional capacity to oversee the design, fabrication, and installation of public artwork while collaborating with City staff, engineers, general contractors, fabricators, and installers as needed. Studio artists with an interest in pursuing public art projects are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
Applications are open to professional artists, collectives and artist teams residing in Southern California (from Ventura to San Diego), and must be available for multiple project meetings with the design team, city agencies and others as required, as individual projects are developed. Employees of the City of Los Angeles are not eligible.
Selection Process
An artist selection committee including, but not limited to, arts professionals, principals of the project and City representatives will review submissions and select up to twenty-Âfive (25) artists/teams and collectives for a roster of available artists, which will remain active for three (3) years.
Three to Âfive artists from the roster will then be asked to develop conceptual, site-specifiÂc public art proposals as each new project is initiated. A separate artist selection committee will review the proposals, interview artists/teams, and select public art projects to be commissioned by the City of Los Angeles. Each commissioned project will then be presented to the community and appropriate City agencies for review and approval (including compliance with various City codes for safety, accessibility, seismic safety, etc.).
Budget
Budgets for the public art projects will range from $40,000 to $100,000. Each budget is all-inclusive and must cover any and all costs associated with the design, fabrication, and installation, including certiÂfied engineering drawings and all City permits as required.

Juried Exhibition and Competition
The second new local artist opportunity is a collaboration between the LaunchLA Gallery and the Korean Cultural Center, which are inviting “all Southern California visual artists to submit work for a juried exhibition and competition at The Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, August 17 to August 30, 2018.”
The theme of the exhibition will be “Intersection.” According to the sponsors:
“An intersection occurs when two or more paths cross: where cultures, histories, ambitions or chance converge, creating defining moments of decision, denial or opportunity. For some, the paths are riddled with obstacles or even blocked, while the way is smoothed for others. The opportunity is fleeting for some, but can last a lifetime for others. “Intersection” is a call to artists who respond to these diverging and converging courses in their work. This exhibition aims to brings together artists from across Southern California whose practices express components of intersectionality, privilege, choices, culture, chance, or events.”
The show will be juried by Emily Gonzalez Jarrett, Independent Curator and Artist & Museum Liaison at HONOR FRASER

Entry fee: $32 for up to 3 images (detail shots count as 1 image).
Eligibility: Open to all Southern California artists (San Louis Obispo/Bakersfield to the southern US border), age 18 and older.
Types of art: All fine arts visual media will be considered. Artwork shown in prior juried exhibitions at LAUNCH LA is not eligible.
