Weekend Buzz – Events for December 3-4, 2016

estatesaleThis seems to be the weekend for interesting holiday shopping.

Starting a bit early, there’s a stylish estate sale running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Sunday at 434 N. Orange Dr.  It’s the home of the owners of the Garde boutique on Beverly Blvd., and includes personal mid-century modern furnishings, along with discounted items from the store.  See the link above for photos and other details.

256px-John_C._Fremont_Branch_Library,_Los_Angeles,_CaliforniaFor some even bigger bargains, check out the the Friends’ of John C. Fremont Library’s monthly book sale, both Friday (12-4 p.m.) and Saturday (12-5 p.m.) at 6121 Melrose Ave. Most books are priced from $.10 to $1, and all proceeds benefit the library.  CDs and DVDs will be available, too, in addition to books.

grandcentralmarketWhile either of the two sales above may provide some great gift items, we’re also starting to hear about a lot of specifically holiday-themed markets and pop-ups (see this weekend’s event list at WeLikeLA for a bunch of them).  One that particularly catches our eye is the third annual Grand Central Market Holiday Marketplace, running both Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the iconic downtown location.  In addition to the market’s regular vendors, there will be holiday-themed pop-up shops from Birch & Bone, Brown Bag Books, Courage & Craft, Farm LA, Ink + Smog, Knead & Co. Pasta Bar + Market, Los Angeles County Store, MADE by DWC, M.Greenwood Jams, Paper Pastries, Spread the Love: Peanut Butter, Ursa Minor Handmade and YA Living. There will also be gingerbread cookie baking and decorating from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday…and live music from caroling groups, steel drum artists and a Klezmer band (among others).

dtlaminimakerfaireFor something less retail oriented, and more hands-on creative, try the Downtown LA Mini Maker Faire, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Downtown Central Library, 630 W. 5th St.  This mini maker faire “follows the “big” Maker Faire model of celebrating invention, creativity and resourcefulness, but is much smaller in scale,” according to the organizers.  The original Maker Faire started in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area as a project of the editors of Make: magazine. It has since grown into a significant worldwide network of both official and independently-produced events. The event is free to the public, but reservations are requested at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dtla-mini-maker-faire-registration-28898801092 .

cafamweaving2For another crafty event on Saturday, head back to the Miracle Mile for a Frame Loom Weaving Workshop from 12 to 4 p.m., with Kellee Creative at the Craft and Folk Art Museum.  Artist Kellee Vopelak will teach beginning weavers to set up a frame loom, various weaving techniques, and how to use weaving tools.  Participants  will leave with their own wooden frame loom and several weaving tools and materials. The workshop cost is $165 ($155 for CAFAM members) and includes the loom and materials.

picassoOn Sunday, the art theme continues, as LACMA opens its big new Picasso and Rivera: Conversations Across Time exhibit. According to the museum, Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera were both ambitious, prolific contemporaries and competitors, with larger-than-life personalities. The show compares their “artistic trajectories,” “presents moments of intersection in the formation of modernism both in Europe and Latin America, and asks how these towering figures of the twentieth century engaged with their respective ancient Mediterranean and Pre-Columbian worlds.”  Definitely a “must see.”

colburnLater, and also at LACMA, you can wind up your weekend with a free concert featuring The Colburn Youth Orchestra, with Director Maxim Eshkenazy at 6 p.m. in the Bing Theater.  The group will performWagner: Prelude to Die Meistersinger, Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Stravinsky: Firebird Suite. The Colburn Youth Orchestra members are 13 to 18 years of age, and selected through competitive auditions. They perform standard symphonic literature, as well as newly commissioned works and special arrangements.

Sounds like a lovely way to end the day.  Enjoy your weekend!
