Weekend Buzz – Events for October 1-2, 2016

booheader

Some of L.A.’s big annual Halloween season events seem to be starting this weekend, and one of the most notable is one that won’t be happening: L.A. Live Steamers, in Griffith Park, has announced that after 15 years, it will not be running its hugely popular Ghost Train this year.  So if your family tradition for the spooky season always involves a trip in that direction, you might try Boo at the Zoo instead.  Every day in October, the L.A. Zoo will feature special adventures (creepy caves, face-to-face animal encounters,  etc.), live performances, special animal feedings, pumpkin carving, strolling characters…and crafts (on weekends).  All ages are welcome, and costumes are encouraged, of course!

humanconditionFor the grownups, on Saturday evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., there’s an opening reception for Human Condition, a huge new “immersive, site-specific” art exhibition at the old Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center – an abandoned hospital at 2231 S. Western Ave.   The location, which was the first Black-owned hospital in Los Angeles, opened in 1971 and closed in 2013. The exhibit features more than 60 emerging and established artists from Los Angeles, New York and Europe, exploring “the corporal and psychological experience of being human” through sculpture, drawing, painting, performance, and immersive installations located in the dilapidated remains of the hospital’s surgical rooms, maternity wards, a psychiatric floor, and cafeteria. It runs through November 30.

beyondfestverticalIf you’re more in the mood for film on Saturday night, try the BeyondFest at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, which starts Friday and runs through October 11. It’s billed as “the highest attended genre film festival in the U.S. and exists to build the genre community in Los Angeles.”  This year’s films include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Big Trouble in Little China, Dawn of the Dead, Taxi Driver, The Wolf Man…and many, many more.  See the link above for days and showtimes.

kidsinthekitchenOn Sunday, from 1-4 p.m., join actress Sarah Michelle Gellar for a fun-filled afternoon of dessert decorating, crafts and prizes at aspecial  dessert edition of Kids in the Kitchen at The Grove. The decidedly non-spooky event is presented by Foodstirs, a modern baking company that sells organic mixes and kits that encourage kids and parents to bake happily and healthily together.

cityofgoldLater on Sunday, the Los Angeles Times will present a screening of City of Gold at the Wiltern, followed by a Q&A with Pulitzer Prize-winning food writer Jonathan Gold, and a tasting party featuring a multi-cultural tasting menu from some of L.A.’s prime restaurants.  Food tickets can either be purchased in advance or on the night of the event. All ages are welcome, and a full bar will be available. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the screening starts at 6.

satyriconAnother food and film event will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, as Barnsdall Art Park hosts the last of this season’s Wine & a Movie fundraising series at the Hollyhock House. This week’s event features a screening of Fellini Satyricon with a late-summer Satyricon-style feast to go with it.  For ages 21 and over only.

And finally, we’ll leave you with three weekend updates from Metro:

metroconstructionheaderFirst, the transit organization will hold a family-friendly Community Art Workshop on Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., to help inspire artworks for the new Purple Line Extension Section One (from Western to La Brea).  Area residents are invited to come and show what they love about their neighborhoods, and to share and map imagery and words about the people, character, history and stories that make those neighborhood places special. Art supplies provided will be provided.  All ages are welcome, and the session will be held – appropriately – at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, 5814 Wilshire Bl.

Second, please remember that Wilshire Blvd., between Highland and La Brea, will be closed again from 8 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday, as the installation of concrete decking continues there.

And finally, please note that on Saturday, Metro will start traffic control activities to make way for jet grouting at Wilshire and Arden.  The work will include placing k-rail (concrete barriers) and street restriping in the center lanes of Wilshire, which will reduce Wilshire to two lanes in each direction between Rossmore and Lucerne for approximately 6-8 weeks. There will be intermittent lane closures this weekend (but no full closures of this segment).

Have a great weekend!
