Weekend Buzz: Events for September 14-15, 2019

Cinespia’s next-to-last screening of the year is “All About Eve,” on Saturday night at the Hollywood Forever cemetery.

As seems to be common lately, a couple of great bargain shopping opportunities lead off our Saturday morning this week.

The first, which actually starts today (Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and continues tomorrow (Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) is the End of Summer Warehouse and Sample Sale from local clothing designers raw earth wild sky, at 937 S. Mullen Ave.  You’ll find savings up to 80% off retail prices (sizes XS-XL), as well as seconds for $10 (XS-XL), and fit samples and prototypes (small, 4-6 only) for $5.  Also, on Saturday only, the Department of Yarn will have home accessories and gift items available as well. Please note that all sales will be via cash or credit card only.

Next, over at the Hollywood Heritage Association‘s Lasky Barn, 2100 N. Highland Ave., will be the museum’s annual Hollywood Books and Memorabilia Annual Sale. There will be more than 600 items available, including used books and memorabilia representing many actors, actresses and genres.  Offerings include original movie posters, lobby cards, autographs, photographs and more. Many items are from the West Hills estate of Brian A. Horton, a lifeling movie memorabilia fan and historian, whose collection features Natalie Wood, Frances Farmer, Jean Harlow, Annette Funicello/Disney, Paul Walker and more.  There will also be a silent auction for an apron worn by Mary Astor in the 1949 version of “Little Women.”  And there will be a buy four-get one free deal on books.  Cash and credit cards only.  Bring your own bags or boxes.  No pre-sales.  And you must be present to make purchases.  For photos and more details, see the sale link above.

Meanwhile, for those currently considering or researching a purchase – of an electric car – check out the annual Charge Up LA event, part of the National Drive Electric Week, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday at LAFD’s Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center, 1700 Stadium Way, near Dodger Stadium.  (There will be free parking at Lot #13 at the Stadium).  Participants will be able to see and drive several current makes and models of electric cars – which are probably in almost everyone’s driving future – and learn more about current and upcoming electric car technology.  See our story from last week for even more details.

Also in the automotive vein on Saturday, the Petersen Museum will host two events worth noting.  The first is a free child safety seat check-up, with appointments available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   According to the museum, “more than 90% of safety seats inspected at check ups are being used incorrectly,” and rear-facing seats are now legally required under California law until children are 2 years old.  You can also find out why most children need a booster seat until ages 10-12.  Note that although the event is free,  appointments are strongly encouraged by calling  (310) 318-5111. “If you do not have an appointment, there may be a wait of more than one hour or you may be turned away.”

Next at the Petersen, for the adults in the family, is a special Photography Vault Tour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, at which, for the first time ever, the museum will both open its exclusive vault area for docent-led tours and allow attendees to capture the very special vehicles there on film (using hand-held cameras only, on a lanyard at all times, with no tripods). Tickets are $95 and include both museum admission and free parking.  Also, for those who’d like “museum-quality” photos of their own vehicles, the Petersen is offering a special professional photography session for $250 (these can be scheduled for various times between September 14 and 30).  See the event link above for full details on both opportunities.

Just across the street, from 12-7 p.m. on Saturday at the La Brea Tar Pits, will be the biggest local event of the weekend – the 17th Annual Tar Fest Music and Art Festival.  This year’s free event, sponsored by LaunchLA, will celebrate “LA Culture Past, Present and Future,” and will include KCRW DJs (DJ Valida, Raul Campos, Jeremy Sole), art installations, live painting, and all sorts of other family fun.  It’s appropriate for all ages, and will include a Lagunitas Biergarten and Cocktail Lounge, as well as many of the best food trucks in Los Angeles.

For a more intimate gathering on Saturday afternoon, voyage over to the John C. Fremont Library, 6121 Melrose Ave., for the monthly French conversation class at 1 p.m.  All levels are welcome, and it’s a great opportunity to revive your rusty high school language skills, meet new people, or prepare for that dreamed-of vacation to Paris. It’s also free and open to everyone.

Moving into Saturday evening, there are a couple of good vintage film screenings.  The first, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., is The Master, the 2012 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as a “mentally unstable and alcoholic WWII veteran whos search for purpose is complicated when he forms a profound yet explosive bond” with a charismatic author played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The second notable Saturday night film is the classic “All About Eve,” starring the indelible Bette Davis and Anne Baxter at heights of their witchy talents as two highly competitive  actresses at opposite ends of their diva-esque Broadway careers.  It’s the next-to-last offering in this summer’s Cinespia film series at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd.  Gates open at 6:15 p.m. and the movie starts at 8. The event will feature free treats (while they last) from Jon and Vinny’s, as well as Cinespia’s usual custom photo booth, classic movie treats at the concessions bar, and a wine bar.  See the event link above for more details.

Moving on to Sunday, starting at 11:30 a.m., Knowles Karate Academy will host an Intro to Women’s Self-Defense Workshop to benefit Alexandria House.  Participants will learn and practice some simple but effective standing, striking and ground techneques, and all proceeds will go to helping women and children find safe and permanent shelter.  Tickets are $25 at the event link above, and the event is limited to 20 participants, so please make reservations if you’d like to attend.

Next, looking toward Sunday evening, it’s back to the movies at the Egyptian Theatre, as the Cinematheque presents a double feature of The Godfather and The Godfather II, starting at 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Francis Ford Coppola’s classic crime family movies feature indelible performances from Al Pacino, James Caan, Kiane Keaton, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall, and Marlon Brando…and represent one of the few instances in which filmdom generally agrees that the sequel is every bit as good as – or better than – the first film in the series.

And finally on Sunday, on a different screen at the Egyptian Theatre, is a 100th anniversary screening of “The Son-of-a-Gun,” an 8mm flim from 1919, in which Gilbert M. Anderson, who also directed the film (and starred in the legendary “The Great Train Robbery” in 1903), plays “a wild man known as the-Son-of-a-Gun,” who “saves a young man from a gang of card sharks at considerable personal risk.”  The silent film will be accompanied by live music.

Have a great weekend!
