This weekend features a really jam-packed Saturday, followed by a much more mellow Sunday.
First up on Saturday, you can do some bargain-hunting at an estate sale at 241 S. Citrus Ave. It runs today (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., then Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The organizers note that the homeowners were “family friends” of legendary designer Herman Miller and his wife, who “influenced their taste in mid-century modern furniture.” There will also be a large sterling silver collection, fine china, fine art, more furniture, designer clothing and more.
Saturday also features two environmentally-minded events. First, starting at 10 a.m., at LADWP’s downtown headquarters, 111 N. Hope St., is the big ChargeUpLA electric car event, which is part of the national Drive Electric Week to raise awareness about the benefits of electric cars. The second environmentally-themed event on Saturday is the Rise for Climate Action rally, starting at 11 a.m. at Esperanza Community Housing, 801 W. 23rd St. The event is the local extension of a national Rise for Climate Day of Action, which focuses on “climate, jobs and justice,” and calls on state and local elected officials “to take aggressive action on climate change, protect frontline communities, and create good jobs in the clean energy economy.” The local event will include a call for a required 2500-foot health and safety buffer between oil operations and homes and schools, along with support for a statewide commitment to no new permits for oil or gas drilling or fossil fuel infrastructure, and a transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. For those in an art mood, the Craft and Folk Art Museum will host its annual CLAY LA ceramic marketplace and fundraiser on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features the works of 18 distinctive local ceramic artists, including Alyson Iwamoto, Betsey Carter, D. Ceramics, Eunbi, Funzise Ceramics, Gina Zyrcher, Jen E Ceramics, Jodi Siegal Ceramics, KLAI, Kristen Erickson, Lizbeth Navarro, Neenineen Studio, O-M Ceramic, Rami Kim, Ren*Vois, Sonera Pottery, and Uno + Ichi, Yukariwith. There will also be workshops, music, and drinks…in addition to the great shopping. Admission is free with museum admission…though there is also a Brunch and Preview event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, which includes early access to the marketplace, complimentary food and drinks and a flower bar. Later, starting from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, there is more shopping to do, and some great bargains to be found, at the John C. Fremont Library’s monthly Friends of the Library Book Sale. Most books are priced between 10 cents and 1 dollar…with special sales (50% off!) on all travel and cookbooks. All proceeds benefit programs of the library (6121 Melrose Ave.)
Starting at 2 p.m., for those with young Harry Potter fans, The Show That Shall Not Be Named comedy and improv troupe will host a “Back to Hogwarts” party at the Miracle Mile Toy Hall, 5464 Wilshire Blvd. Enjoy two hours of crafts and a silly show to celebrate #BacktoHogwarts month. Tickets are $12.75 per person, and are available at the event link above.
Also at 2 p.m., the environment comes back into focus at the Wilshire Branch Library, 149 S. St. Andrews Pl., for a free event called “Saving Nature in Trump’s America,” led by Susan Zakin, one of the country’s most respected environmental journalists and the author of the book “Coyotes and Town Dogs: Earth First! and the Environmental Movement.” For more information, call the library at 323-957-4550.
Later, and back in the art groove, head over to the LaunchLA gallery, 170 S. La Brea, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, for an opening reception of the new exhibit, SHē, curated by Elizabeth Tinglof, and featuring works by Sara Alavikia, Phung Huynh, Deborah Martin, Annelie McKenzie, Andrea Patrie, cima Rahmankhah, Douglas Tausik Ryder, Kristine Schomaker, Kim Tucker, J. Michael Walker, and Float (Kate Parsons and Ben Vance). The exhibition explores portrayals of the female persona through contemporary interpretations informed by historic imagery. And finally on Saturday, for some good old fashioned musical and comedy fun, the American Cinematheque is presenting a screening of The Blues Brothers at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., at 7:30 p.m. Join Jake and Elwood Blues (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) on a cross-country “mission from God” that leaves a mighty trail of destruction in their wake and some unforgettable musical numbers courtesy of the great Ray Charles, James Brown and Aretha Franklin (in her only big-screen movie appearance).
Sunday is much quieter this week, events-wise, but it’s also Grandparents’ Day, so a great day to spend with a grandparent. You could go out to brunch, stroll through a farmer’s market or two, or – if you have or know a particularly strong and energetic grandma – take her to the “Food Not Bombs” Women’s Self-Defense Intro Workshop, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Knowles Karate Academy, 4378 W. 3rd St. The cost for the workshop is $30, and one third of the proceeds will be used to fund the purchase of items for hygiene packs and much needed health items for Los Angeles’s Downtown homeless population. Participants will learn and practice some simple but effective standing, striking, and ground techniques. The event is open to ages 8+. Wear comfortable clothing and no jewelry.
