Worried About the Stormwater Fee or Oil Wells Near Your Home? Attend Tonight’s GWNC Sustainability Committee Meeting!

Oil and water!  Do these two topics mix?  Find out at tonight’s Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council Sustainability Committee meeting.

First up, the committee’s own Bill Funderburk will give an update on what LA’s recently-passed stormwater fee means for us.  Funderburk is an  environmental lawyer and recent LADWP board member, so is uniquely well informed on this topic.

Next, Barbara Hensleigh of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter will argue for a 2,500 foot health and safety buffer zone between oil wells and homes.  (See the Sierra Club’s page about how Culver City recently passed a similar ordinance.)  This is a very timely subject, now that enhanced oil extraction techniques – such as fracking – are being used in Los Angeles, as mentioned in a recent Los Angeles Magazine article.  (See also our 2011 story on oil production at the Farmer’s Market.)

The committee will then vote on whether to support or oppose the proposed buffer zone, currently under discussion by the city council and other city departments.  The vote could help nudge the city into action… or nudge them into leaving things as they are.

The meeting will be held at Marlborough School, https://www.marlborough.org/ in the board room (next to the soccer field), at 7PM. There’s free parking; enter on 3rd St. (There’s even free EV charging.)
