Families Welcome at Fiddler’s Bistro

Fiddler’s Bistro at 3rd St and Martel Ave.

In our family, nothing says “togetherness” quite like an impromptu dinner out. Relieved of having to produce a meal for four from the three eggs, peach yoghurt, wilted scallions, left over chicken breast, half a tub of salsa, and something unlabeled wrapped in tinfoil in the fridge, I can sit back and let a much better meal come to me while listening to my family trade stories about their day. However, finding a spot where my sons can be a tad squirrely — and the food is kid and adult friendly — can be challenging.

But not impossible. Fiddler’s Bistro on Third and Hauser has been a favorite of our family’s for seven years. The fare is American and Mediterranean, so the kids can have a grilled cheese sandwich while my husband and I eat chicken kabobs or pasta. In warm weather, we can sit in the garden and the kids can get up and walk around. When it’s cooler, the inside is bustling so much that I don’t get uptight if one of the kids falls off of his chair. The food is always excellent (a spicy red pepper spread is brought to the table before the meal) but it is the staff that truly sets Fiddler’s apart. They really seem to “get” kids. They smile and tease and ask my boys questions. And when the meal is over, they offer candy or small bags of gumi bears. Life doesn’t get much better than that for my kids.

Or for my husband and me, sipping a glass of wine and holding hands across the table.
