Windsor Square Pianist to Play Recital at St Brendan Church

Having just graduated from Polytechnic Pasadena and about to head off to Barnard College in New York City, Windsor Square resident Eleanor Debreu is taking the opportunity to cap off her high school years with a senior recital in St Brendan Church on Sunday, June 10 at 3:30 pm. The 45 minute performance is open to the public.

Eleanor, daughter of Stanislau and Elizabeth Byrne Debreu, has been playing since she was seven. She began with a private instructor, then spent years at the Colburn School, she told the Buzz,  before quitting in 9th grade. “I didn’t play for a while, but then when I heard my little sister Annie taking lessons from this great teacher I decided to start up again. At that point it was my own decision to decide to play.”

The teacher Eleanor admires and works with is Joseph Itaya of the Well Tempered Music Studio.  Itayo had only high praise for Eleanor. “She has prodigious skill on the piano, but also lives a very busy high school life as many teenagers do these days,” he told the Buzz. “Even with finals, college applications and graduation, she’s managed to find four hours a day to practice  for this recital.”

Eleanor will be playing Prelude and Fugue in C Minor by Bach, Posthumous Nocturne in C# Minor by Chopin, Impromptu in A Flat Major by Schubert, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, and Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag. She loves playing pop also, and has composed her own works for piano and voice.

Eleanor chose St Brendan Church to play in for its “fabulous acoustics” and the fact that it’s a physically beautiful space. It is also one she knows well having gone to St Brendan School through the 8th grade and being a member of the church. Her grandmother Marie-Claire Debreu came all the way from France for graduation and the recital, and her Hancock Park grandparents, Skip and Chickie Byrne, will also be front-row fans.

The recital is open to the public and is an opportunity to soak in some glorious music in a neighborhood setting on a summer Sunday in June.
