“Big Sunday” is a city-wide event for community service with a simple philosophy: everyone helps, everyone wins. The folks over at St. Brendan School are taking this challenge to heart – organizing multiple projects that allow lots of students and their families to participate.
On Sunday, May 5th they’ll be planting trees and shrubs at the St. Brendan campus, plus weeding and removing garbage from around the whole block that surrounds the school (3rd St. to 2nd St., Manhattan Place to Western Avenue). This project truly creates a job for everyone and every age level. All of the registered volunteers will receive a free “Big Sunday” t-shirt in appreciation of their time and efforts on behalf of the community!
Additionally, St. Brendan School’s project leaders have a few other Big Sunday projects planned:
- They have 150 paper-mache “flower pot kits” ready for assembly and eventual delivery to St. John of God Assisted Living and Retirement Center.
- The St. Brendan 4th grade Junior Girl Scout troop has joined the Big Sunday Lemonade Brigade and are hosting a delicious homemade lemonade stand to benefit ‘Alex’s Lemonade Stand’ – a pediatric cancer research non-profit organization.
- They are hosting a booth on the school campus through LA Stormwater (the Los Angeles Watershed Protection Program) that educates about protecting the LA River and Santa Monica Bay and water conservationism with free materials and giveaways to distribute.
Cleanup after these St. Brendan School Big Sunday events will be a snap, as they have partnered with another school in South Los Angeles to pick up all of the St. Brendan Big Sunday recyclables to benefit their band program.
Whether you can stay for a while to volunteer, or just stop in to buy a cup of lemonade and visit our other booths, the St. Brendan community would love to see you over at the school!
