Can you think of a more perfect location to view a film about the history of the women’s movement than the Ebell of Los Angeles, one of the oldest women’s clubs in the U.S. Tracing its roots back to 1894, the Ebell moved to its current location on Wilshire and Lucerne Blvd. in 1927, pre-dating much of the neighborhood around the stately building.
On Thursday, January 14 the Ebell will be screening the documentary film “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” at 7:30 pm. There will be a reception with refreshments from 6:30 -7:30 pm to introduce potential members to the club’s wide range of activities and philanthropies.
“It’s a great movie and perfectly represents the Ebell: it straddles a historic past and a forward-looking present,” said Laura Foti Cohen, Vice President of Membership at the Ebell.
Anyone interested in membership – or just in seeing the film or learning more about the Ebell – is welcome to attend. Tickets are $20. Annual membership in the club is approximately $250, a portion of which supports the preservation of the historic clubhouse.
The film resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” takes us from the founding of the National Organization for Women (NOW), when ladies wore hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!).
“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry,” aims not to romanticize the early movement, but to dramatize it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory. The film does not shy away from the controversies over race, sexual identity and leadership that arose. “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry,” captures the spirit of the time — thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.
