The Los Angeles Conservancy’s 10th annual HPOZ Conference will take place inside the rarely-open-to-the-public walls of the Church of Scientology on Franklin Ave, Sat. May 19, 2012. The conference is put together to enlighten and educate those living in Historic Preservation Overlay Zones (HPOZs) and for those interested in forming an HPOZ in their neighborhood.

The greater Hancock Park / Wilshire area now boasts some seven HPOZs that protect the incredible historic inventory of homes and multi-famiy buildings built primarily in the 1920s and 1930s. But the area also contains a number of neighborhoods not yet protected with HPOZ status including Brookside, Larchmont Village, Sycamore Square and Citrus Square, to name a few.

This year’s conference will include:

  • Design Roundtable — Take part in an interactive session presenting and analyzing preservation projects in a mock critique format
  • Gaining Community Consensus: Before, During, and After — Hear about real-life experiences in engaging community members and how to reach out and maintain support
  • HPOZ 101: The Basics of L.A.’s Historic Districts — Gain a fundamental overview of the HPOZ Ordinance, Preservation Plans, project review, and Historic Resource Surveys
  • The HPOZ Project: Getting Your Project to the Finish Line — Learn practical tips to ensure success when you upgrade, renovate, or otherwise change your HPOZ property, including initial planning, getting approval, and managing the construction process
  • Practical Application of Restoration Principles — Get hands-on training on maintenance and repair of building features
  • Understanding Architectural Styles and Their Role in Preservation — Learn to identify popular historical building styles in Los Angeles and evaluate compatible treatments
Hollywood Grove to be on afternoon tour of HPOZ Conference

Lunch discussion will include topics of unpermitted work and code violations, sustainability projects, and the impact on HPOZs of the recent redistricting in LA.

The afternoon of the event, participants will be able to choose a visit to one of the three HPOZs near the conference venue: the new HPOZ Hollywood Grove, the bungalows of Melrose HIll or hillside Mediterranean village style of Whitley Heights.

I’ve attended the conference in the past and always find the panels informative and discussions helpful. This year it should also be fun to explore the grounds and buildings of the Scientology campus, looking at it through architectural  eyes and without any Scientology sales pitch.

Register for the HPOZ Conference ($20 before May 13) at the LA Conservancy website.
