THE MUSES of the California Science Center Foundation will present five distinguished former honorees for their 50th anniversary “Women of the Year” 2012 program set for Thursday, March 1st at the California Club in Los Angeles.

Former First Lady of California, Gayle Wilson, (honored 1992), will moderate a panel discussion with the following remarkable women: Sylvia Earle, Ph.D. (honored 1981)  Oceanographer and Deep Sea Explorer; Anna Fisher, M.D. (honored 1985) Astronaut, NASA; Susan Love, M.D. (honored 1993)  Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation for Breast Cancer; Lucy Jones, Ph.D. (honored 1999)  Seismologist, Chief Scientist, Multi Hazards Initiative.

Listening to any one of these women would make a fascinating luncheon but the MUSES have assembled all 5 for their anniversary luncheon!

Back in day when women were not invited to serve in leadership positions at major cultural institutions, they participated by establishing support groups that would often provide significant funds. The MUSES was such a group founded in 1962 by the wives of the trustees of the Science Center, at the time called the California Museum of Science and Industry. Hancock Park luminary Margo Leonetti O’Connell’s mother, Caroline Leonetti Ahmanson, was one of the founders. Today the MUSES provide vital support for science education programs at the Science Center. Their modest endowment has grown over the years and provides much needed hands-on science programs for kids of all economic backgrounds to encourage interest in science.
