Perhaps the most widely-traveled monolith in centuries, the “Rock” has settled in at its new home at the Los Angeles County Art Museum (LACMA) and will open for visitors as the installation “Levitated Mass” this Sunday, June 24th.
“Levitated Mass” by artist Michael Heizer will be open to the public at 11 am in a dedication ceremony when visitors can finally walk the 456 foot long ‘slot’ taking them under the rock and making it appear to hover above. The installation is on the 6th St side/Fairfax end of the LACMA campus in the area now called the Resnick North Lawn,  and will not require museum admission to view. But just to show their thanks to the larger LA community that cheered on the rock during its long  journey over 11 nights from San Bernardino to the Miracle Mile, admission to all areas of the LACMA museum will be free to residents from June 24 – July 1st.
