Residents at Irving and 6th Street, including LA’s own Mayor Garcetti, awoke this morning to a geyser of water as a fire hydrant was knocked over in a two-car accident around 7:30 am.
According to LAFD Captain Gatica from Fire Station #29 that responded to the call, a woman driving east on 6th lost control of her car in a collision, the airbag triggered, and her car smashed into the fire hydrant. No one was seriously hurt in the accident.
“It took us a while to turn off the water,” Captain Gatica told the Larchmont Buzz. “We had to move the car and then found the stem line into the ground was bent, so it took a while to stop the flow.” He said the usual output in such a break is 7,000 gallons per minute, and it raged for quite a few minutes. A sad sight to see in this time of severe drought.
But the sight itself was actually quite beautiful, with the early morning light filtering through trees. Thanks to Buzz reader Caroline Labiner Moser who shared some photos she shot with us, as she also tweeted the comment: “Windsor Square drama-all ok. Firemen in wet t-shirts makes a lively morning.”
