Kelly Fielding has opened Au Courant, featuring sustainable fashion for people who care about how their clothes are made as well as what they look like.

Au Courant, a  clothing boutique has opened at the north end of Larchmont at Melrose in one of the ground floor spaces in the newish building at 5665 Melrose Avenue.  Owner Kelly Fielding, a youthful fashion entrepreneur in her first retail venture, has created a “curated collection of conscious clothing” for women who care about how their clothing is made as well as how it looks.

aucourantexterior“People care about their food and I see this as a logical extension of that, ” said Fielding who is vegan and happy to located just up the block from Cafe Gratitude at 639 N Larchmont Blvd.

“I looked all over and thought people who live in this neighborhood would support this concept,” said Fielding of her Larchmont space which she designed with architect Beth Holden, New Theme Inc. who specializes in sustainable architecture. The display furniture is repurposed lumber that Holden sourced from an old barn in Germany.

Fielding hopes to do her part to support the Fairness in Fashion movement to be more conscious of the working conditions and environmental impact that goes into creating fashion. Fielding has filled her shop with clothing brands that she loves that also manufacture responsibly and pay a living wage to their workers.

Every brand has a story that Fielding is happy to share and many are actually printed on the labels. Manufacturers are hoping consumer will become more discriminating in their selections and support brands that take the extra effort to manufacture responsibly.

As reported in aucourantlabelRacked LA, Fielding’s “hand-picked labels in the mix include Misa, LACAUSA, Flynn Skye, Jenni Kayne, and Lady and the Sailor, and they all care as much about the environment as they do about making the globe a more stylish place.”

Fielding invites the neighborhood to her opening celebration tomorrow evening from 6-9 pm. 10% of all the purchases made at the event will be donated Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment. Cafe Gratitude will be catering with all vegan and vegetarian options. Street parking is available but valet will be provided at the corner of Melrose and El Centro.
